EYFS Curriculum

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) starts when children begin Nursery and continues to the end of Reception. It is a hugely important stage of a child’s education.

At Fulbridge Academy, we have high academic ambition for all children. Our Early years curriculum is designed to provide rich and varied experiences that intend to enthuse, engage and motivate children to learn and achieve highly.

Within the Early Years Statutory Framework (EYFS), there are seven areas of learning that shape our curriculum. The areas of learning are broken down into prime and specific areas. The prime areas, which are primarily focused on in Nursery, are particularly important for building a foundation for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning.

They are:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

The specific areas then help the child to strengthen and apply the prime areas. The specific areas are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Children benefit from meaningful learning experiences across all seven areas of the Early Years curriculum, enabling them to make links in their learning and to the wider world. A topic-based curriculum design allows for this cross curricular learning with topics carefully chosen and key skills embedded throughout all areas of learning to ensure there is a progressive approach to learning. Through play, exploration, and guided learning, we support each child’s growth and curiosity, helping them build the skills and confidence that lay a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

In Reception, phonics and maths are taught through direct instruction, a focused teaching approach where children are guided step-by-step to learn specific skills and concepts. Teachers provide clear explanations, model tasks, and give children opportunities to practice with support, helping them build a solid understanding of learning to read and mathematical ideas.

At the end of the Reception year, learning is formally assessed against the Early Learning Goals.
