Values

Values Statement

At Fulbridge we value the diverse ethnic backgrounds of all pupils and families and undertake a variety of events and lessons to celebrate these. We have found this approach to be enriching for all parties as it teaches tolerance and respect for the differences in our community and the wider world.

We ensure that through our school vision, values, rules, curriculum and teaching we promote tolerance and respect for all cultures, faiths and lifestyles.

We have a duty to prepare our children for life in modern Britain and to keep them safe.

Actively promoting also means challenging pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental human values, including ‘extremist’ views.  We also understand the vital role we have in ensuring that groups or individuals within the Academy are not subjected to intimidation or radicalisation by those wishing to unduly, or illegally, influence them.

At Fulbridge Academy, values of tolerance and respect permeate all areas of school life. This engenders a climate within which pupils feel safe and secure and facilitates the fulfilment of potential. Pupil voice plays an integral part in driving the Academy forward and school rules at different levels are seen as the foundation upon which this can be achieved.

Fulbridge Academy is committed to serving its community and surrounding areas. We recognise the multicultural, multi-faith nature of the United Kingdom and understand the crucial role our Academy plays in promoting these values.

Our admissions policy promotes that all are entitled to education under British law regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political or financial status. We are truly a school for all. We follow equal opportunities guidance which guarantees that there will be no discrimination against any individual or group, regardless of faith, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, political or financial status, or similar.

Fulbridge Academy is committed to serving its community.  We recognise the multi-cultural, multi faith and ever-changing nature of the United Kingdom, exemplified by the North Ward of Peterborough where our Academy is situated.

The Government emphasises that schools are required to ensure that key ‘British Values’ are taught in all UK schools.  The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 ‘Prevent’ Strategy. We believe that these values are not exclusive to Britain.

The five British Values are:

  • Democracy

  • The rule of law

  • Individual liberty

  • Mutual respect

  • Tolerance and understanding of different faiths and beliefs

Democracy

Children are involved in democratic processes via Future Leaders (our school council).  Future Leaders  itself is led by a member of staff and adheres to democratic processes, reporting its actions to the children, school community and Governing Body.

We have links with councillors who have come into school and organised visits to the Town Hall and the Houses of Parliament to educate the children about upholding the law, understanding the electoral system and the role of the police and the prosecution service.

Democracy is clearly evident within our Academy. Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard through Future Leaders and pupil questionnaires. Our school behaviour policy involves rewards which the pupils have discussed.

The principle of democracy is consistently being reinforced at Fulbridge Academy, with democratic processes being used for important decisions within the school community and in the History and R.E curriculum as well as in P4T time and assemblies.

The Rule of Law

Fullbridge Academy has links with the local police, fire and drugs services.

We have a clearly structured behaviour policy which all stakeholders understand and follow.

We regularly review behaviour incidents in school and share these with key stakeholders.

The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the Academy, or the country, are consistently reinforced as part of the school day, as well as when dealing with behaviour and through assembly themes. Pupils are taught the values and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the Police; Fire Service; Ambulance etc. are regular parts of our calendar and help reinforce this message. The concept of the Rule of Law is also reinforced through teaching activities in our Citizenship and Ethics curriculum.

Individual Liberty

Within Fulbridge Academy, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through E-Safety and their personal, social and emotional education programme. Whether it is through choice of challenge, of how they record, lunch options, of participation in extracurricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices.

Pupils have key roles and responsibilities in school, with badges to signify their role of responsibility within the Academy (Future Leaders, and Head Boy and Girl). As part of our approach to the National and wider curriculum, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in our safe and supportive environment.

Fulbridge has a robust anti-bullying/anti-racist culture and has in place a comprehensive Behaviour for Learning approach.

Mutual Respect

Our Citizenship and Ethics curriculum embodies values of mutual respect through units of learning such as Relationships and Being a Responsible Citizen.

Our full time Sports Teaching Specialists actively promote an attitude of equality and fairness.

Respect is one of our Active Learning life skills that pupils focus on throughout the Academy and pupils have been part of discussions and assemblies related to what this means and how it is shown.

Our school ethos promotes mutual respect between pupils across different phases of school.

These ideas are reiterated through the school and classroom rules, as well as our behaviour policy.

Respect is a strong part of Fulbridge Academy and is part of its values.  Pupils learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others.  All members of the school community treat each other with respect.

Mutual respect is embraced throughout the curriculum with a focus on our Active Learning life skills that provides the opportunity for pupils to express their views in a safe environment.

Tolerance and understanding of different faiths and beliefs

Our R.E curriculum provides a broad and balanced education on a range of faiths, religions and cultures.

We have a large number of EAL children and actively use school resources to promote children from all different backgrounds in our Academy.

We embrace pupils of all different backgrounds and value everyone’s place in a culturally diverse society. Assemblies and discussions involving prejudices and prejudice-based bullying are regularly held.

Our diverse population is one of Fulbridge Academy’s greatest strengths. We aim to  equip pupils with the ability to understand their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving the opportunities to experience such diversity within the school community. Pupils are actively encouraged to share their faith and beliefs within the school and celebrate festivities throughout the calendar year.  The R.E curriculum provides a broad and balanced education on a range of faiths, religions and cultures.

Fulbridge Academy strives endlessly to ensure that pupils leave with the strongest foundation of values upon which to build a successful life and make a successful contribution to our Society.
